INTERVIEW WITH UTE C. FALLSCHEER THE AUTHOR OF TRACKING TRAINING FOR ALL DOGS

Introduction About the Book and Its Inspiration

1. Doggozila Magazine:

What inspired you to write “Tracking Training for All Dogs”? Was there a specific moment or experience that motivated you to share your knowledge?

Ute Fallscheer:

It was a process not a moment. I shared my knowledge in workshops for all breeds, but there was no book I could recommend for all breeds when dog handlers ask me for a recommendation.

2. Doggozila Magazine:

Your book covers tracking training for dogs of all breeds and skill levels. What challenges did you face in making the content accessible to such a wide audience?

Ute Fallscheer:

I had to consider that each breed or even each dog has a specific way to be motivated to do what the dog handler wants him to do. A shepherd for example has a „will to please“ that my little terrier does not have.

3. Doggozila Magazine:

How does your approach to tracking training differ from other methods currently available in the field.

Ute Fallscheer:

I prefer the method of faultless learning. Therefore, I have to lay the training track in an appropriate way.

4. Doggozila Magazine:

Can you share a memorable success story from your own dog training experiences that influenced the content of the book?

Ute Fallscheer:

It was at a national championship. The tracking area was solid frozen and without any vegetation. I thought that it is impossible for my dog Janka to find the track. All tracking dogs which started before me did not succeed. My dog Janka started motivated with a deep nose and I was so astonished. SHE DID IT. My way of training my dog was successful. I saw dogs at trials that were anxious to make faults and therefore gave up. But I want my dog tracking without fear but with a lot of joy.

QUESTIONS ABOUT DOG TRACKING TRAINING

5. Doggozila Magazine:

For someone completely new to dog tracking, what are the most important foundational skills to focus on?

Ute Fallscheer:

Patience and enough time!

6. Doggozila Magazine:

How do you tailor tracking training to suit different dog breeds, temperaments, or energy levels?

Ute Fallscheer:

I adapt the training track to the skills of the dog.
For example, the step width, the step wide, the position of the treats, …

7. Doggozila Magazine:

What common mistakes do dog owners make when starting tracking training, and how can they avoid them?

Ute Fallscheer:

They do not plan a structured training. First read my book which describes the structured tracking training in little steps and learn in theory how to train your dog. Then look for a competent trainer if possible and start tracking.

8. Doggozila Magazine:

How do you balance maintaining a dog’s natural instincts with teaching structured tracking techniques?

Ute Fallscheer:

Usually, I use treats as the most important way to motivate the dog.

9. Doggozila Magazine:

What role does the handler’s mindset and approach play in successful tracking training?

Ute Fallscheer:

It is very important he the dog handler is mentally balanced in the training situation. An angry dog handler cannot react appropriate to a difficult or undesired training situation.

10. Doggozila Magazine:

Can you explain the importance of the dog’s scent work and how it contributes to their overall mental and physical well-being?

Ute Fallscheer:

Scent work uses the natural skill of a dog. It demands mental focusing and physical condition. A dog loves to have a task.

Did you encounter any surprises or learn something new about dog tracking while writing the book?

Ute Fallscheer:

No.

13. Doggozila Magazine:

I left out all techniques that use force, pain and fear for the dog.

14. Doggozila Magazine:

What was the most challenging part of writing “Tracking Training for All Dogs”?

Ute Fallscheer:

To describe the training steps only in approx. 200 pages. There are a lot of training tips I could not add, because the book would have become too extensively and therefore expensive. Additional videos you find on YouTube.

How did you ensure the book would be engaging for both novice and experienced dog trainers?

Ute Fallscheer:

As I mentioned before, the structure of my book follows the learning process of the dog handler and the dog. I describe the learning steps and why they make sense.

What would you say to someone who feels their dog might not be capable of learning tracking skills?

Ute Fallscheer:

Try it with appropriate treats and a competent trainer.
